Greenock and District covers a diverse and vibrant area in the west of Scotland, encompassing the towns of Greenock, Gourock, and Port Glasgow, the villages of Inverkip, Wemyss Bay, Kilmacolm, and Quarriers Village, and the island community of Rothesay. Within the District, there are currently 11 active Scout Groups, with a further group in Rothesay that is currently vacant. These groups are distributed as follows: five in Greenock, two in Gourock, and one each in Inverkip and Wemyss Bay, Kilmacolm, Quarriers Village, and Port Glasgow.
The District benefits from its own dedicated campsite — Everton Campsite — which offers a wide range of adventurous activities for Scouts, including crate climbing, archery, tomahawk throwing, grass sledging, and a popular slip n’slide. The site also boasts a low ropes course, scenic forest walks, and games like Giant Jenga, providing plenty of opportunities for outdoor fun and team building. In addition, Greenock and District is fortunate to have three RIB powerboats, giving Scouts the chance to experience power boating and water-based activities.
The natural landscape within the District provides even more scope for adventure. Leapmoor Forest offers excellent hiking and exploration, while the Greenock Cut Centre and Loch Thom provide stunning backdrops for walking, environmental learning, and water-based activities. The River Clyde, which borders much of the District, adds further opportunities for water adventures, and local mountain biking trails attract both Scouts and leaders keen on developing cycling skills.
Beyond its outdoor facilities, Greenock and District is well-equipped to support Scouting activities with practical resources. A minibus is available for hire, along with marquees and patrol tents, ensuring groups can easily organise larger camps and events. The District’s powerboats, complete with qualified instructors, can also be hired to help more Scouts access water-based activities safely.
Greenock and District’s rich Scouting culture extends into the creative and cultural realms as well. Every two years, the District stages its “world-renowned” Gang Show in November, showcasing the talents of young people from across the area. The District also boasts its own Pipe Band and an Amateur Radio Club, offering young people opportunities to develop musical skills and explore the world of communication technology.
Together, these features make Greenock and District a dynamic and well-resourced part of Scottish Scouting, offering both adventure and community spirit in abundance.
